CHAPTER 15

By mid-week, Charlene was exhausted and thoroughly stressed.

She’d had back-to-back follow-up doctor’s appointments that added to her stress. She’d failed the hearing test again, and Dr. Holland told her the damage to her inner ear was most likely permanent. Although the broken leg and arm had healed, the residual pain persisted, especially in her leg, resulting in her continued use of painkillers. Topping that off, she’d have to remain on anti-seizure medication despite the fact that the seizures had lessened.

But at the end of the week her spinning head kept her in bed most of the day. She was comforted by the twins. But one look at their faces and Charlene knew they thought their clone/alien ‘mother’ with the big head and funny eyes was coming apart. She assured both that she was fine despite their doubtful expressions and Shelly checking to see if green goo was leaking from a hole in her head.

She’d pushed herself going to the office, and decided to take a few days off. But she wasn’t sorry for going because she’d discovered so much about her sister, including that she was a smart, savvy businesswoman.

Corinne had been well liked and respected by her colleagues and staff. She’d made a lot of money for Mills Shipping. Reflecting back on their meeting, Charlene now guessed when she offered to pay Corinne back one thousand dollars as a partial payment of what she’d sent to cover their father’s burial, it was probably just pocket change to her, whereas for Charlene it was the bulk of her meager savings. But she’d also found out that Corinne was a force to be reckoned with. Her excellently drafted, but scathing emails were proof of that.

Charlene could only smile when she’d read them. But her smiles faded when she came across shipping orders for TM Hunt Enterprises. The one thing that troubled Charlene was that Corinne’s correspondence with the company became more insistent in the last six months leading up to the night she’d been killed.

In one such email, Corinne had virtually threatened the president, Mr. Hunt. She’d written, “If the order of June 26 is not cancelled, I’ll be forced to inform the CEO, M. Mills and Interim CEO, T. Mills, of the continued partnership. This is my last and final warning…” That alone told Charlene that it was highly probable that Tyler had no idea what was going on with TM Hunt Enterprises.

But why wouldn’t he know? He signed the invoices.

Upon further checking, she found out that Corinne had attempted to cancel several other orders for Hunt Enterprises. Comparing the invoices to the database on Corinne’s computer showed nothing out of order. Everything matched up…or so Charlene thought.

When she compared the same invoices against what was on Corinne’s laptop, they were completely different; nothing matched up. The merchandise, which should have been filing cabinets according to the invoices, were listed on the laptop in a series of codes: PA’s, DA’s and AAR’s. The code sequences would change with the next shipment, and there were six in all.
